Having announced his retirement from the music biz in 1970, Sinatra returned in 1973 with this sadly uneven record. Though its title suggests a triumphant mood, the feel of the album is surprisingly down. “Let Me Try Again,” “Nobody Wins” and “There Used to Be a Ballpark” revisit the pessimism of The September of My Years and Watertown (albeit with less satisfying results), and his cover of “Send in the Clowns” is a bummer on several levels. The arrangements, by Don Costa and Gordon Jenkins, are overly slick and soggy, and Sinatra doesn’t seem too excited about returning to the recording studio. This was Ol’ Blue Eyes’ biggest album of the ’70s, but is hardly his best or most memorable. –Dan Epstein
Well, the down-side is the album has only 9 songs, running a little over 36 minutes; quite short compared to usual cd standards of today. The upside: this is vintage Sinatra singing some rather powerful vocals with real class. You do pick up a little raspy vocals here and there but I have to say, I really have enjoyed this album. You can sense an artist who really enjoyed what he was doing and who loved sharing his gift in this collection. No, it's not very long and it has a few selections that seem a bit corny, but the vocals are a treat to listen to and the orchestration is outstanding. He was a powerfully gifted singer and this album clearly demonstrates that fact. I think it actually gets better and better the more I listen to it. It's definitely worth hearing and I'd imagine that most people would really enjoy the experience of this brief but powerful cd. I think had it containted 10 or 12 selections, I'd have given it five stars. You like Sinatra, you'll like this cd. -- Vintage Sinatra........
Back in the 1970's I lived in Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida and listened to this collection on an 8 track player. 30 years later I recalled how much I liked it and found it on Amazon. Sinatra at his most mellow. If you like mellow, relaxing Sinatra, this was, in my opinion, his best collection ever. If you want more swinging tempos, buy some other CD. But for relaxing background music you can't beat this CD. -- Sinatra- Laid Back And Mellow
I had the vinyl album back in the day and bought this CD used as it was the only way to obtain it. This is the only studio recording of YOU WILL BE MY MUSIC and DREAM AWAY CHILD that I am aware of, which makes the scarcity of this album all the harder to understand. It's one of Sinatra's best works so I cannot understand why it is no longer in print. I think it should be re-mastered and re-issued for all of his fans to enjoy. -- Great CD...why is it out of print?
I used to have this in cassette form, but lost it somewhere along the way. I think the "Send In The Clowns" on this CD is the better version than the one he sings with piano. It's the orchestra strings. They add to the emotion of the song. The first two songs on the CD are also beautiful. I've heard a lot of bad reviews for this CD, but I am pleased with it, as it's the first album he did as a comeback, and he sounds so emotional in it. -- Sinatra Comeback
Art and Soul of Jazz - A tribute to Charles Mingus, Jr.As a lifelong Sinatra fan, I think this is his best work. I've owned several copies of it which have been pirated by relatives once they hear it. This makes it difficult because it is not to be found in record stores. I think the reason it is so popular is because it shows a rare side of Sinatra singing songs that reflect his incredible range and his unique ability to enliven the lyrics. Sinatra was influenced by Billie Holiday; his coddling of the lyrics in this album reflect that influence. The selected songs evoke elements of nostalgia. For example: "There used to be a ballpark" takes me back to my childhood days; "Send in the Clowns"--always a favorite--yanks at the common human experience of life's highs and lows. It underscores the fact that we are at once spectators and participants in this journey. The background music complements its delivery by this master lyricist. I own many Sinatra albums, but this one surpasses all in my opinion. -- Old Blue Eyes never left
